MiniMax M3.1 Flash vs GPT-6 Luna: Inputs and Tools

Compare MiniMax M3.1 Flash and GPT-6 Luna by the inputs and tool protocol your application needs before interpreting their prices. Both have million-token context windows, but they are not interchangeable request configurations. MiniMax accepts video and keeps thinking on; Luna accepts text and images, can disable reasoning and supports up to 128,000 output tokens.
This is a documented-contract comparison, not a head-to-head quality benchmark. The MiniMax model page and Luna model page maintain current EvoLink access and rates. The decision here is between these two exact models, rather than a general ranking of coding models or a GPT generation upgrade.

Input typesText, images and videoText and images; no native audio or video input
Output typeTextText
Reasoning levelslow, medium, high, xhigh, maxnone, low, medium, high, xhigh, max
Default reasoningmax; cannot be disabledmedium; none disables reasoning
Function callingInterleaved thinking; preserve the complete assistant response between turnsResponses supports reasoning with function calls; Chat Completions function calling requires reasoning_effort: none
Official input / output price$0.15 / $0.60 per million tokens$0.10 / $0.50 per million tokens, Standard with up to 272K input tokens
Official cache-read price$0.015 per million tokens$0.01 per million tokens in the same input band
Specifications and provider prices checked October 19, 2026 against MiniMax invocation, MiniMax pricing and OpenAI's Luna reference. These are native-provider prices. Luna bills cache writes separately; above 272K input tokens, input and cache rates double and output rates become 1.5x for the full request. What the differences change in an application

Video: MiniMax documents video input. Luna needs a video converted to image frames or a text transcript first. That preprocessing is application work, not a native video capability. Confirm the chosen gateway's supported request shape before sending media.
Reasoning: MiniMax's five levels adjust depth while keeping thinking enabled. Luna adds none and defaults to medium. Make the intended setting explicit when changing models. A task that requires no reasoning cannot treat MiniMax low as the same contract as Luna none.
Tools: MiniMax requires the full assistant history, including available reasoning_content and tool_calls, or all Anthropic content blocks. For Luna, use Responses when combining reasoning and functions; Chat Completions requires reasoning off for function calls. An OpenAI-compatible label alone does not establish identical tool behavior or gateway support for every native feature.

EvoLink provides a shared gateway for authentication, model configuration and usage records. Match each model's input and protocol requirements first, then evaluate the actual task. A larger context window says how much can fit, not how accurately the evidence will be used; a lower token rate does not establish lower cost per accepted result.

Keep the prompt, input revision and tool definitions comparable. Inspect the serialized setting, final answer, tool IDs, termination, retries, total time and actual charges. Compare a complete task rather than streaming speed alone. Language-specific formatting and output requirements belong in the acceptance check; this article supplies no measured language-quality ranking.

Continue with the Luna configuration page or MiniMax tool-use reference. The application implements routing and recovery; using a unified gateway does not itself create a quality-based fallback policy.
